Scroll down for the picture slideshow. Lovely Steinway Model I, built in New York City in 1899. Most people who know Steinway uprights are familiar with the Model K, which is ubiquitous and has been made from 1903 to the present. It has a very plain case. The Model I preceded the Model K, and is quite rare compared to the Model K.
This piano has gone through an extensive restoration, including refinishing of the outside and harp, new strings and tuning pins, new Steinway hammers, new hammer flanges and shanks, and many other details. The second photo below is from an 1899 Steinway catalog with a picture and description of this piano. Stylistically, the case borrows from ancient Greek architecture, utilizing dramatic doric columns and pilasters. This is also one of the rare upright pianos that has a full sostenuto pedal (middle pedal), like a grand. In most uprights the middle pedal performs some lesser function, such as operating a mute or lifting the bass dampers. It's rare to find an upright with a middle pedal that is just like a grand.
